NGOs brought Russian mercenaries to train Prabha’s guards

By Gayan Kumara Weerasinghe -Lakbima News

Intelligence agencies have launched a high profile investigation to screen NGOs which have smuggled ex Russian military officers to train Prabhakaran’s bodyguards.
Five Russians have been ‘ smuggled’ into the country in the guise of NGO personnel, and have been imparting special training to personal bodyguards of Prabhakaran in the Vanni.
This information was revealed to defence units as a local bodyguard of the LTTE leader who underwent that training in 2004, was apprehended by defence personnel. The training program with the participation of 35 personal bodyguards of Prabhakaran had been carried out over a month in 2004.
The training included firing, driving and dismantling a vehicle and reassembling it in a very short time. The five Russians who came to Sri Lanka had entered the Vanni through the Omanthai entry point, and had stayed in the Vanni for the whole duration of the training.
Meanwhile, the suspect local bodyguard, who was arrested at a welfare camp in the Vanni, had revealed that only 35 bodyguards had been trained by the Russians.
The defence units have started an extensive investigation in order to identify these Russians and the NGO that had supported them. Defence officials suspect these Russians could be retired members of a Russian defence unit. A special investigation is being made into the matter.
